what is crank bars/bent up bars and why it is important in RCC roof slab

As the name suggests it is the bent or cranked bar which is provided alternatively in the RCC slab.

The real reason to provide bend is to protect the slab from compressive stresses which are formed at the support of the slab. So in order to take care of this tension, we need reinforcements on the top side of the slab near the beam supports. Cranked bars are used so that we have reinforcements at the bottom in the middle portion and reinforcements at the top near the edges both using the same bars.
